"Implement ASUU's demands" - Jonathan directs education ministry

President Goodluck Jonathan has directed the Federal Ministry of Education to commence full implementation of the demands made by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in order to resolve the indefinite strikeembarked upon by the union. Jonathan gave the directive while on astate visit to Nasarawa State, to commission the ultra-modern TA’ALModel Primary School, constructedby the Governor Tanko Al-Makura administration to provide qualitative, competitive and free education for the less privileged. Represented by Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo, the president, who wasnot categorical with figures, said billions of naira have been approved and Education Minister, Ruquayyatu Rufai, has been directed to commence implementation as soon as possible. The president also disclosed that Nigeria has the highest number of out-of-school children in Africa, with a staggering 9.5 million children without access to basic education. While pledging the continued support of the Federal Government to Nasarawa State through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Jonathan also promised to provide free textbooks and science laboratory equipment to TA’AL model school and no fewer than 30 others, which are to be constructed inall the local government areas of the state. Governor Al-Makura, however, observedwith delight that, “This is the first time in many years that the president of our great nation would commission any project in the state.” Al-Makura lamentedthat “despite the fundamental importance of education to the development of oursociety and its influence on our way of life, we lost our bearing on education a long time ago," adding that “there is no doubt that over theyears, we have allowed mediocrity to invade the quality of our publicschools. “It is in this direction that we, as a government, in our quest to enhance social justice, have established this model school, not only for the elite but for all citizens of the state, including the rural population.” Source: Daily Newswatch.

ASUU: We have not called off the strike

ASUU, yesterday, disclosed to the general public that it will not suspend the industrial action, unless Federal Government looks into the agreement it reached with it in 2009. This is resulted from rumuors and publications on social media that the union had called of the one week old strike. On an interview with Vanguard, the ASUU Chairman, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Chapter, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka said: “The strike is still ongoing. We have not suspended or called-off the strike. Perhaps, before we do that,a National Executive Council(NEC) meeting must be held, then, the resolutions of the meeting will be made known to all chapters of the union,” he further added, “The indefinite and total strike willcontinue, except government meets our demands.” Meanwhile, FG through its Ministry of Education led by Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai will on Monday, meet with stakeholders in the ministry, which included Vice Chancellors of Federal universities and their Governing Councils, together with interested Vice Chancellors of State and Private universities. It would recalled that the union had last Monday, called out its members on an indefinite industrial action over what ittermed government’s failureto honour the Academic Earned Allowance (AEA) which formed a component ofthe 2009 agreement the government signed with the union.
