ASUU Strike may gain ground as Sambo, Minister, VCs In Closed Door Meeting

Vice President Namadi Sambo, yesterday held a closed-door meeting with the supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike and vice chancellors of universities, in a bid to end the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
No official statement was issued at the end of the meeting held at the Presidential Villa. Also, nobody who attended the meeting was ready to take questions from newsmen.
Other members of the delegation included Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole, among others
Last week, the Senate passed a resolution urging Senate President David Mark to prevail on President Goodluck Jonathan and officials of the Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Universities (ASUU) to end its four-month strike that has shut down Nigerian universities since July.
The Senate resolution to empower Mark to lead the negotiation team with government and ASUU was based on a motion sponsored by108 members.
The latest move by the vice president may not be unconnected with Federal Government’s resolve to bring about a quick end to the impasse, following the failure of the Governor Gabriel Suswam negotiation team to end the crisis.

ASUU Strike: Senator Challenges Lecturers To Debate Over ‘Ridiculous’ Demands

The Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Senator Sola Adeyeye yesterday described as ‘ridiculous’ the pay demands by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the federal government.
This is just as he challenged lecturers to a public debate to justify the unresolved pay demands which has led to the protracted strike by university lecturers.
Adeyeye who is a Professor of Molecular Biology made the comment to newsmen at the National Assembly against the backdrop of last week’s Senate debates on the protracted ASUU strike.
On account of his contributions at plenary, Adeyeye was particularly criticised by the ASUU chairman, University of Ibadan branch, Dr. Segun Ajiboye.
“There is no question that the enormous rot in Nigeria’s education sector cries for urgent and immediate attention.
But as unpopular as saying so might make me to the membership of ASUU, the truth is that ASUU has been a part of the problem.
I would gladly love to engage Dr. Ajiboye in a prime time televised debate on my assertion,” Adeyeye stated yesterday.
The senator proposed five practical solutions to this “most national pressing crisis’: firstly, the National Assembly should henceforth appropriate at least 26 per cent of Nigeria’s current revenue to education alone.
Second, the education ministry must ensure the streamlining of the “endless parastatals that drain resources while making little or no contribution to national well-being and progress.”
Thirdly, the government in a bid to raise revenue for funding a “national redemption programme” in education, all imports should attract a mandatory education tax of one per cent.
Fourth, beginning from January 1, 2014 till December 31, 2018, all workers in Nigeria must contribute five per cent of their income as education taxes. Embezzling any amount of these revenues targeted for education should be taken as an act of treason.
Fifth, the costs for running the offices of all elected and appointed political office holders should immediately be pruned by 50 per cent.
According to Adeyeye, the “implacable” demands by ASUU are fueled by resentment at the “obscene” privileges which Nigerian politicians enjoy.
Adeyeye tagged the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P) a “conduit” exploited by the government for corrupt enrichment and called for its scrapping and the diversion of SURE-P revenue to the education sector.

    ASUU strike: Fagge salutes colleagues

As the ongoing ASUU strike enters day 121, the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Nasir Fagge, has commended members of the union for their conduct since the strike began on July 1.
Fagge commended the efforts of ASUU principal leaders at ensuring that ‘there is no going back’ until their demands are met.
In a statement posted on the association’s website, he also described the Federal Government’s stance on the union’s demands as “no more than a repeat performance of a one-act-play: all the deceptions, propaganda, lies, mischief and such other Shenanigans.’’
The statement partly reads, “Dear comrades, as the struggle to save Nigerian University system is being pursued, I like to salute all our members for their resoluteness in ensuring that the 2009 ASUU/Government Agreement is implemented in accordance with the Roadmap defined by the 2012 MoU.
“We believe very strongly that the rot and decay in the university system cannot only be arrested but is also reversible. We believe even more strongly that the key to turning round the university system lies in the sincere implementation of the agreement.
“But our resolve to save the system and our country remains unwaivered. We will continue to carry the banner of this struggle to its logical conclusion. I urge all our members to maintain the spirit of camaraderie and remain firmly resolute in ensuring that our patriotic struggle succeeds. United we bargain, divided we beg!”
Meanwhile, the pioneer Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Jubril Aminu, has expressed optimism that the ongoing ASUU strike will soon be over.
Aminu said this in a speech he delivered at the ‘50+1 Anniversary Lecture’ of the commission held on Tuesday in Abuja. He noted that the FG was committed to the funding of the universities to ensure that students return to the campus.
The strike began after a series of warning strikes by the lecturers over the non-implementation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement. Their demands, among others, are the rehabilitation and provision of infrastructure in the nation’s universities and the payment of earned allowances.
In a related development, the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Chibuzo Asomugha, has said the union has yet to hear from the FG concerning the fresh industrial action which began on Friday, October 4, 2013, following the latter’s inability to resolve outstanding issues with the union.

ASUU strike: Lecturers' demands capable of hindering university education - Senator

The Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, Prof Sola Adeyeye, on Monday said that most of the requests of the members of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities as contained in the controversial 2009 agreement with the Federal Government were unrealistic.
He said the requests, if granted, could hamper the development of university education in the country.
Adeyeye, who was a lecturer for about four decades before he joined politics, said most of the university lecturers were apparently not aware of what operated in the western world.
Adeyeye, a professor of Molecular Biology, told journalists in Abuja that in the United States of America for instance, most of the institutions were flexible in terms of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.
He spoke while reacting to a statement credited to the chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter of ASUU, Dr. Segun Ajiboye, who condemned Adeyeye’s contribution on the floor of the senate on the issue.
Ajiboye had said, “Having enjoyed good salary and benefits as a lecturer abroad, the senator was indifferent to the rot in the Nigerian universities.”
But Adeyeye, said, “I was bemused by the reference by ASUU spokesman, Dr. Ajiboye, to my enjoyment of Duquesne University’s reputed Flex Benefits for its members of academic and non-academic staff while denying similar benefits to ASUU members.
“First, in most instances, as its very name suggests, the Flex Benefits Programme at Duquesne was flexible. It was also contributory. The university simply matched up to a predetermined ratio, whatever amount had been contributed by the staff.
According to him, there are five universities within a four-mile radius of Duquesne University and each of the institutions has salary, wages and benefits structure that are unique to its own institution.
This, he said, was quite different from the Nigerian situation where he noted that” ASUU wanted a retention of the rigid system whereby a Professor of Engineering at the University of Lagos enjoyed similar salary structure as a Professor of Religious Study at Ibadan and a Professor of History at Ile-Ife.”
Adeyeye also faulted Ajiboye’s assertion that he had his own (Adeyeye’s)children educated in the USA, while not caring for the children of ordinary Nigerians who were being made to bear the grunts of the rots in the nation’s tertiary education sector.
“Dr. Ajiboye erroneously, and perhaps deliberately and mischievously, sneered that as a senator, I sent my own children to be educated in the USA. All my children had either graduated or had been admitted into a university between September, 1980, when I left Nigeria and 2002, when I finally returned to the country.”

Daniel Onwe drags ASUU, FG to court

A Lagos-based lawyer, Mr.Daniel Onwe, has dragged the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, before a Federal High Court, Lagos, over violation of the fundamental right to the dignity of person of the affected students, who have been out of school following the union’s strike.
The suit, FHC/CS/1360/13, was brought pursuant to Section 46(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, Order II of the Fundamental Human Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules, 2009 and Article 5 of The African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act, Cap. 10, LFN, 1990.

He is seeking for an order directing the Federal Government and ASUU to resolve their differences and forthwith re-open universities, including an order mandating ASUU to call off their ongoing strike action and resume their job of lecturing in the said universities immediately.
Hearing on the suit, before Justice Ibrahim Buba, is on November 13.

ASUU strike - A salvage mission

The ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is a salvation mission to rescue our tertiary education, President of the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria Shehu Sani has said.

Sani told our source yesterday that the ongoing strike is a patriotic act of resistance against bad and visionless leadership in the country, adding that it is a genuine struggle to save the education sector from total collapse.

University teachers, he said, have a right to embark on strike and as such cannot be stopped by, "hired agents of the state or people ignorant of the imperative of sacrifice".

"When ASUU was in the trenches fighting military dictatorship and fighting to restore democracy to our country, most of those opposed to the strike today had no courage to speak out. Those opposed to the strike are reactionaries and running dogs of the political establishment," he said. He added that leaders' indifference to the state of education stems from the fact that most of their children study in expensive schools abroad.

He lamented that successive governments in Nigeria destroyed tertiary education by chronic underfunding, systematic neglect and deliberate lack of emphasis.

"Most of our leaders attended public schools but public schools today have become public nuisance and public shame. Nigerian public universities are now dysfunctional bakeries for churning out half baked graduates while private universities have become outpost mills for massive production of fraudulent first class graduates," he said.

Sani said there is no other way for university teachers to press home their demands and pressurise the Federal Government to keep to its promises than through strikes.

He therefore urged the Federal Government to meet the demands of the teachers and not resort to blackmail.

"It is ironic that some Nigerians have the guts to protest against ASUU strike but fail to protest against the Federal Government when it reneged on all agreements it entered with ASUU," he said.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday, 19 October 2013, in Ado-Ekiti appealed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to the classrooms in the interest of their students.
He made the appeal at the inauguration of the College of Engineering Complex at the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Ekiti State.
The three-storey college complex was also named after the President.
Jonathan urged ASUU members to heed his appeal saying that whatever their grievances might be, keeping students out of school for four months was unpatriotic.

“The collective destiny of tens of thousands of tomorrow’s leaders should not be held hostage to vagaries of labour disputes.
“As long as we are humans, as long as we are a developing society, this labour dispute must come up.

BSU Lecturers expresses discontent over FG's non payment of salary

Lecturers of Benue State University (BSU) on Friday lamented about the non-payment of their September salary, as they remained adamant over their demands which led to their current strike.
Dr Samuel Ikoni, the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in BSU, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi that the non-payment of their September salary was a worrisome development.
``It is unclear if the non-payment of our salary is connected to the no-work-no-pay threat issued by Gov Gabriel Suswam some weeks ago," he said.
NAN recalls that Suswam then ordered the lecturers to return to work or forfeit their salary.
However, the lecturers defied the order, insisting that their continued participation in the strike was for the benefit of the BSU.
NAN also recalls that the ASUU embarked on the strike to press for increased funding of infrastructural projects and researches in the country’s universities, among others.
Ikoni, however, noted that the non-payment of salary was not peculiar to ASUU members alone, as members of the non-academic staff union too had yet to receive their salary.
He regretted the delay, saying that it had caused some hardship to the lecturers.
He stressed that the lecturers’ salary payment schedule, which was taken to the bank, did not have “a cash backing’’ to enable payment. (NAN)

UNICAL to Hosts All Nigerian Universities Debating Championship

A chamionship expected to foster the intellectual capacity of students and prepare grounds for budding student politicians in Nigerian universities will be hosted by the University of Calabar (UNICAL), an official said.
The Dean of Students Affair of UNICAL, Prof. Eyong Ubana Eyong, made the plan known during an interactive session with newsmen in Calabar on Tuesday.
The First All Nigeria Universities Debating Championship billed for Oct 20 through Oct. 26 will precede the Sixth Pan-African Universities Debate championship which the university will also host from Nov. 29 to Dec. 8, Eyong said.
He said the debate was an all students affair to promote the culture of debate in tertiary institutions, where the culture of listening, dialogue and acceptance of superior argument to change the course of action were encouraged.
He said that the theme of the debate would be “Corruption, Insecurity and National Development’’, to reflect Nigeria’s current challenges.
Also, Mr David Ejim, a student debater, said the debate would be recorded and streamed on the social media for students at home due to the current strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
Ejim, who will feature in the tournament for UNICAL Debating Club, said the institution was hoping to host to win.
He said that the debate was part of the development of young people in Nigeria.
He said that 11 universities out of the 102 universities in Nigeria had registered for the tournament, which would use the British Parliamentary Debate format to encourage critical thinking and discourse.
In his speech, Mr Franklin David, the Chief Adjudicator for the debate, said each of the participating institutions would present two debating teams and one adjudicator at the championship.
He said the idea was to help the students in critical thinking and tolerance of opinion.
“In Nigeria we are used to criticising policies of government and politicians, but in this debate we will also not only criticise but proffer solutions. (NAN)

Suspected cultist murder final year LASPOTECH student

A final year student of Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH Ibrahim Oluwaseun, 26, has been killed by suspected cult members at his parents’ home in Somolu area of Lagos. The deceased, a student of Business Administration, was said to have been preparing to defend his final year project this week when he was killed on Friday night.
Our source also gathered that the deceased was sitting with his mother outside their home on New Balogun street, when he was shot around 9pm.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the gunmen were about seven.
He said, “They were seven in number; they came to the area fully armed. All those guys were strangers to us but have been coming to the area for some time now. Nobody knew exactly what they were up to.
“That night, they confronted the boys in the area with guns and immediately people saw them, they ran for their lives.
“They shot at Oluwaseun who was with his mum outside their house. It wasn’t as if Oluwaseun was involved in any fight. He fell into the gutter immediately he was shot, just as everybody tried running for cover.”
our source gathered that in the ensuing confusion, neither of Oluwaseun’s neighbours nor relatives, witnessed his fall into the gutter. It wasn’t until after the confusion had subsided that residents allegedly observed that Oluwaseun was nowhere to be found.
Another source told our source that the Divisional Police Officer, Somolu Station, responding to a distress call on the shooting, drafted some patrol teams to the area.
He said, “Two patrol vehicles were sent to the area but even while the police patrolled the streets, no one noticed that Oluwaseun was in the gutter. Perhaps he might have survived the shooting if he had been discovered on time.”
Oluwaseun was said to have been discovered, few minutes after the shooting; by then, he was already dead. His corpse was said to have been recovered from the gutter by the police and taken to the Gbagada General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
When our correspondent visited the scene a day after the incident, there was an uneasy calm on the street; shops were under lock and key.
While a candlelight procession was held in the deceased’s honour on Saturday, there were fears among residents of more attacks. At the Oluwaseuns’ residence, visitors poured in to condole with the deceased’s family and pay tribute to his memory. His distraught mother was said to be unavailable for comments.
However, a close friend of the family, Alhaja Modupeola Kazeem, described Oluwaseun as gentle and an easygoing young man.
Kazeem said, “I was shocked on hearing the news because I am like a second mother to him. I was one of the people who brought him up; he was a cheerful person who never made trouble. We were all surprised how those guys just came and shot at him without any provocation. Ibrahim was just a victim; he was never part of any bad group.”
She added that Oluwaseun had been buried on Saturday in accordance with Muslim rites.
The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, confirmed the incident to our reporter on the telephone. He said, “There was indeed an incident on Friday night in which some suspected cultists shot one Oluwaseun in Somolu. Police immediately swung into action. They saw him lying down and he was rushed to the hospital where he died. We are investigating the case to ensure we bring the culprits to book.”

Dont force youths to react - Catholic Bishop warns FG

The Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Godfrey Onah, at the weekend,
warned politicians to retrace their steps, as it would not be possible to quench the anger of Nigerian youth who may soon run out of patience over the poor treatment they are getting from government and their leaders at various levels.
The clergyman stated at the funeral mass organized for Lolo Josephine Oyima Abba, mother of the Enugu State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Engr. Vita Abba at Ede-Oballa, in Nsukka Council Area of Enugu State.
He warned that such neglect could force the youth to revolt against their leaders
The Bishop cautioned that it would be difficult to stop the youth if they were further pushed into frustration.
He threw posers to both the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on the reasons behind the over three-month-old industrial action that has paralyzed academic activities.
He said, “I know that I have enough persons here and also hopefully, enough instruments to carry this message to the ears of the highest echelons of power in this country.
”The common people, the students and their parents, whom I represent, do not believe the explanations the politicians and the academics are giving for the strike; we don’t believe them and we are appealing to them in God’s name to remember we will all end this way (pointing to the dead); let them end this strike immediately.
”I want to ask a question; it is a question not a statement. I am asking the leadership of the country; is it really true that you don’t have enough money to improve upon the quality of education in this country or is it that you are stocking up money in preparation for 2015 in order to buy your way to power or to secure your future indefinitely through corruption?”

NLC restates support for unions, blame FG

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that the Federal and State Governments were responsible for the ongoing ASUU strike, as well as threats of other strikes by different unions in the country.
While blaming the government for failing to abide by agreements reached with different unions in the country, it hailed the sustained action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The acting General Secretary of the NLC, Mr. Chris Uyot, in an interview with our source, said ASUU deserved more attention than it is currently receiving, as it has to do with the improvement of facilities and standard of education in the country.
“ASUU is our affiliate and for every step they have taken, we have been with them; we have been briefed. The NLC is as invested in this case as ASUU itself. The vice-president has been appointed to take over the negotiations and the ball is now in the court of the government as it were. We do not think that the government has given it the type of attention it deserves,” he said.
He said government’s refusal to honour agreements, negates its much publicized concept of the rule of law and order.
“The essence of negotiations for collective bargaining to bring about an agreement is to ensure that there is peace and harmony in the workplace, to bring about better understanding between employers and employees. So if we decide to manipulate agreements that have come through mutual negotiations, we are distorting the very concept of industrial relations which is the foundation of peace and harmony and stability in the workplace. It means we are trying to distort our own laws that guide these things,” he added.
“The world this day is guided by social dialogue and one of the tenets of social dialogue is mutual respect for agreements that have been entered by the partners. When you want to extricate the outcome of something that came through social dialogue, then you are invariably calling for chaos. Both federal and state governments seem to be more interested in violations of agreements and this is the major cause of industrial crises.”
Uyot expressed the readiness of the labour movement to honour agreements entered though collective bargaining and urged the government to do same.
“On our part as labour, we are ready at anytime to respect agreements that are mutually reached, but government is making it a tradition to disrespect the same agreement; you cannot run a workplace or a country like that.
“Government needs to rethink on the issue of collective agreements seriously. We feel sad that the country has been made to experience these problems because our leaders are running a system that respects the same laws which they have set,” Uyot added

ASUU strike: Nigerian lecturers vows to continue strike as FG stop salary payments

The government’s new directive starts from September. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is “unshaken” by the federal government’s recent ‘No Work No Pay’ policy on the striking lecturers, our source has learnt.
The federal government’s decision to stop paying the lecturers’ salaries was confirmed by the university lecturers after their Thursday meeting. Rising from ASUU’s zonal conference in Abuja on Thursday, the union responded to the ‘No Work No Pay’ strategy by stating that it had resorted to other welfare strategies to cope with the effects of the policy.
“The Federal Government has through the National Universities Commission, directed universities to stop the payment of our salaries effective September this year and since then our salaries have not been paid,” Clement Chup, ASUU Zonal Chairman in Abuja, said. “Part of (our) welfare strategy, involve distributing food items, giving out soft loans and cash advances to members,” he added.
The union is currently on an over three-month-old industrial action over the failure of the government to implement the 2009 agreement it reached with the lecturers. Festus Iyayi, a former ASUU President, said that the union remains resolute in the face of the government’s latest strategy. “I can confirm that the federal government has stopped payment of the salaries of academic staff,” Prof. Iyayi, who led ASUU in 1986, told our source
“This ‘get them to capitulate by starving them’ policy has been employed by government in the past. It did not work. Our members are ready to make whatever sacrifices are needed to make government honour agreements,” he added. The federal government’s latest move may have pulled the plug on negotiations between it and the striking lecturers.
The government toed a similar path during the 2009 ASUU strike but the lecturers stuck to their guns, with then ASUU President, Ukachukwu Awuzie, stating that “they would not allow the issue of salaries to dampen the desire of its members to seek fundamental changes in the Nigeria’s educational system.

Meet 9-year-old Jomiloju, Nigerias' youngest Microsoft certified professional

JOMILOJU, A primary six pupil of Role Model School, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, has emerged one of the youngest pupils to obtain the Microsoft Certified Professional certificate.
He came tops among 21 pupils who sat for the professional examination in Lagos.
He is now a Microsoft office specialist in office word 2010.
Jomiloju scored 769 out of 1,000 in the examination held in August.
In his examination score report, the slim-built boy performed well in Sharing and Maintaining Documents, Formatting Content, Applying Page Layout, and Reusable Content, among other subjects.
By the feat, Jomiloju has joined the league of young Microsoft certified professionals, including Nigeria’s 10-year-old Anjolaoluwa Seyi-Ojo; an eight-year-old Indian, Lavishnashree, and two Pakistanis, named Arfa and Thobani.
Microsoft Certified Professional is a certification programme provided by Microsoft Corporation. The certification is tailored towards building skills on Microsoft business solutions, focusing on client-end operating systems such as windows XP, Vista, Windows7 among others.
Jomiloju, whose certificate was signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Microsoft Corporation, Steven Ballmer, says he did not achieve this feat easily, but through persistence and hard work.
He says, “It was not all that easy, because I had attempted the examination last year, I did not make it then. But I remained focused and I put in a lot of hard work.
“At home and in the school, I am always on the computer. After school hours, if am not doing anything, I will go to my Information Communication Technology teacher, to learn more.”
Jomiloju sat for the examination when he was in primary Five.
Relating his experience, Jomiloju says, “In all, I answered 20 questions, after answering a question, the computer takes you to another one. And at times, there will be an instruction to skip the next question. But the programme still directs one to come back to those questions one had earlier skipped.”
But was he really scared having failed once to meet the cut off mark? He stresses that he was really afraid due to his earlier experience but he was optimistic of having success, because according to him, he has prepared well.
He also gives kudos to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tunde-Ladipo, for their support and imbuing in him the ‘can do’ spirit in achieving the success.
He says, “My mum and dad were very supportive. They always tell me never to give up and eventually it paid off. Moreover, they had bought the latest Dell laptop. Again, I am always fascinated about computer. The way it works and the process, and the way it organises data.”
Jomiloju who is a left-handed writer, according to his parents, has been a gifted child. He has always been in love with gadgets. His mum, Toyin, says, “Jomiloju since he was baby had loved playing with gadgets, he was never interested in toys. He would pick up remote controls for both TV and air-conditioner, and he would correctly use them for their specific functions.”
His father adds, “It is not that we are unnecessarily indulging him but he is such a brilliant child. He’s multi-talented. He plays the saxophone, he’s good on keyboard, he acts very well and he’s a good swimmer.
“Each term, he participates in school drama and quiz. He also gets prizes in other subjects, apart from ICT.”
Does Jomiloju want to pursue a career in software/hardware project like Bill Gates and Steve Job? Spotting an innocent smile, the youngster nods his head in affirmative.
His school administrator, Mrs. Adesimbo Banjo, who speaks glowingly about Jomiloju, says the feat recorded by her pupil is a tonic for other pupils.
His ICT teacher, Mr. Mathew Alo, also commends Jomiloju for the feat.
He adds, “Jomiloju was taught all the necessary things he needed to know and he came out as the most outstanding among 20 others from different schools in Lagos.
His class teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Ogunrinola, says Jomiloju takes his studies seriously. She states, “He is not only good in ICT, but in other subjects. He is hard working and well behaved.”
For Jomiloju, he’s not resting on his oars yet, as he says he is still going to seek more Microsoft certifications.
“I still want to sit for more examinations. I will still do excel and power points,” he says.

ASUU strike: Electricity workers threatens power shut down

The National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, yesterday, gave the Federal Government seven days to resolve the strike embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, or face a total shut down of electricity facilities in the country.
The union said that it could no longer sit back and watch those in positions of authority destroy the future of young Nigerians who have remained at home for weeks on account of the Federal Government’s refusal to meet the legitimate demands by ASUU.
General Secretary of NUEE, Mr Joe Ajaero, who spoke at a training workshop for labour leaders in the power sector in Enugu, said that electricity workers across the country would be directed to join other progressive labour unions “to shut down the country” as a way of expressing anger over the lingering face-off between the Federal Government and the academic staff.
He said: “We can no longer sit back and watch this disturbing drama going on between the Federal government and ASUU. If the strike is not addressed within the next one week, NUEE and other progressive unions, will shut down the country.
“It is unfortunate that those in power are not bothered about the closure of the universities. They are less concerned because none of their children are studying in Nigerian universities.
“Their children are overseas just as they travel overseas for medical attention because they have allowed our hospitals to die. Whether our children are out of school or not they are not bothered but we are going to join our children to stay at home from next week.”
Ajaero called on the National Assembly to make a legislation banning public office holders from sending their children to study abroad just as overseas medical trips by public officers should be outlawed to enable government address the numerous problems weighing the nation down.
“Our public institutions are dead because those unpatriotic leaders have nothing to do with them but when they are banned from traveling overseas to access improved facilities, they will have no option than to look inward and address our numerous challenges,” he added.
According to the NUEE General Secretary, the payment of their members’ entitlements had remained slow explaining that the government’s promise to conclude the payment before weekend might not be feasible as majority of the workers were yet to be settled.
He urged the Federal Government to stop playing politics with electricity workers’ entitlements, Ajaero reiterated the union’s resolve not to allow the new investors access to the power stations until all the workers were fully settled.
He, however, expressed regrets that some of the workers who had received their entitlements were already living in luxury by buying expensive cars and traveling overseas instead of investing the funds on rewarding ventures.
Ajaero stated that the training workshop for the union leaders was intended to enlighten them on the need to encourage their members to engage in investments that would be beneficial to them and members of their family after disengaging from service.

ASUU's demands are egocentric - NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Wednesday carpeted the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the ongoing indefinite strike, saying the union and its leadership are frivolous and egocentric in their demands.
ASUU, it will be recalled embarked on a nationwide strike July 2, demanding the Federal Government to implement an agreement reached in 2009, a situation that has paralysed academic activities in all public universities across the country for over three months. The students’ umbrella body and the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in a joint press conference, held in Abuja accused the academic union of deliberately refusing to meet with their representatives despite repeated efforts to have audience with its leadership with a view to having a better understanding of the union’s demands.
NANS President, Yinka Gbadebo, who spoke on behalf of the two bodies, said NANS representatives have met with the Federal Government’s chairman of Needs Implementation Committee, Governor Gabriel Suswan, who according to him, made copies of the agreement and status update on the demands of ASUU to the students’ body.
He said the cause being pursued by ASUU is not in the interest of Nigerian students and the public, warning that they would make all the necessary documents about the 2009 agreement public for Nigerians to confirm whose interest ASUU is actually fighting for.
NANS and NYCN said they have obtained copies of the documents and are convinced that ASUU has been egocentric in its demand from Federal Government rather than pursuing the interest of Nigerian university system. He said that the union has been playing hide and seek over the students’ request to meet with its leadership, a development he said, suggested that the union has something sinister to hide as far as the ongoing crisis is concerned.
Speaking on the demands put forward by ASUU in the 2009 negotiated agreement, the NANS President disclosed that the union’s demands, according to documents obtained from the Needs Assessment Committee, are divided into primary and secondary demands.
The youth bodies while throwing their support behind ASUU for its secondary demands said that the authenticity and sincerity of the union primary demands are questionable.

NLC to Jonathan - "ASUU strike not politically motivated"

The Nigeria Labour Congress,NLC, yesterday, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to discountenance the impression that ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, was a political action against his government as nothing could be farther from the truth.
It then advised the President to tackle the crises in the education sector and prevent a shut-down of the sector.
NLC in a statement by its President, Abdulwaheed Omar, told President Jonathan that those telling him that the strike was politically motivated were the President’s enemies who rather than tell him the truth preferred to indulge in sycophancy, hypocrisy and boot-licking.
The statement titled “Do Not Allow Education Sector to Shut-Down”, reads: “The Nigeria Labour Congress calls on President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to tackle the crises in the education sector and prevent shut-down of the sector. We urge Mr. President to muster the necessary will and skill to confront the issues that threaten this vital sector.
    Asuu cartoon
“As President of the country, he has the onerous task of restoring normalcy to the sector whether the issues are political as he has made the nation to believe or whether they are purely industrial. The threat of a total shut-down is present and immediate and deserves all the urgency and mobilization Mr President could muster. The developments in the Education sector are symptomatic of greater ills in the polity.”
“The strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), for instance is in its fourth month and has almost certainly disrupted an entire academic session with collateral consequences. Also the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has signaled its readiness to embark on a solidarity strike if government fails to resolve within two weeks the issues of contestation with ASUU. Most of these demands if not all, are not new, but are subsisting agreements which government is expected to honour. Some of these agreements border on salaries which government has agreed to pay but has elected to observe in the breach instead. For example the case with the Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities, whose members are being owed for over three months.”
According to the statement “The avoidable strike action by ASUU has caused enough disruption or damage to the sector. The implications for the polity are grave and should be avoided, at least for the sake of our children. We also urge Mr President to discountenance the impression that the strike actions against his government are politically-motivated as nothing could be farther from the truth. Those who pursue this line of thinking are the ones who do not wish Mr President well. Rather than tell him the truth, they prefer to indulge in sycophancy, hypocrisy and boot-licking because it serves their personal motives.
“In order for Mr President to convince himself about the absence of any ulterior motive against his administration by any of the unions, especially ASUU which has come under accusation, we crave the indulgence of Mr President to insist on being availed the details of these agreements.
The Nigeria Labour Congress is not oblivious of the present challenges in the economy but it is convinced that with requisite discipline, will, prioritization and genuine dialogue, the government can reach a truce not just with the unions but could halt the decline in the economy.”

Parents, Students, Stakeholders laments as ASUU strike reaces 100 days

The strike action embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has entered its 100th day.
Millions of students, including those undertaking postgraduate programmes have been idling away at home since July 2.
The failure of the federal government to fulfil resolutions reached with ASUU in 2009 and non-payment of accumulated earned allowances owed the university lecturers are yet to be addressed.
The face-off took a turn for the worse with members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) threatening to join the strike by shutting down primary and secondary schools in the country in solidarity with ASUU.
However, President Goodluck Jonathan, during a recent media chat, said that the lingering strike has political undertone.
Dr Uchenna Kanu, a concerned parent, bemoaned the length of the strike and the negative effect it has had on students. He said, “Our children have been out of school for nearly four months now and the polytechnic lecturers are also threatening to join, and NUT also. If this happens, it means that this generation of Nigerian youth will be blocked off from education and, if that happens, it will amount to an intellectual genocide -- that is, wiping out a whole race intellectually -- and that is what we are preaching against.”
He appealed to the warring parties to consider the plight of the students who are affected and reach a speedy resolution to the crisis. “All parties involved have their case, they have their cause that they are defending but we are appealing to them to realize that they are the intellectual parents of these children and parents never go on strike. So we are appealing to them and, at the same time, we are appealing to the government to not allow the relationship to degenerate to a point where teachers now take recourse to striking. Strike should be not only a last resort but a rare resort,” he said.
Mrs Onuigbo Elezue, another parent, stated that the free time that the strike has afforded the students has led to a marked increase in acts of misdemeanor. She said, “Our children have gotten into all sorts of trouble because they have too much free time on their hands. Many young girls get impregnated every day by young boys because their idle hands have become workshops for the devil.”
Among the affected students, our source discovered that there was a general air of gloom and anger directed towards the federal government and ASUU. Tope Okunlola, a fresh graduate awaiting NYSC mobilisation, expressed his disappointment that the students’ suffering is not considered at all. He said, “This has been 100 days of absolute shame. It is perhaps the highest mark of irresponsibility that the said leaders of tomorrow would be allowed to waste away like this while our counterparts in other countries and private universities leave us in the dust.”
Another student, Tobi Wojuola, advised students to make good use of the time the strike has afforded them and pursue productive and meaningful ventures. He said, “It has been approximately 2, 400 hours of striking time and if you are the student who sleeps 10 hours a day, then well-done, you have slept 1, 000 hours of striking time.
