Reports reaching us says that the medical graduates of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife Osun State have appealed to the striking ASUU lecturers to allow them get inducted, take their oath and get their practising license.
The OAU medical students who should have graduated since July but for the strike embarked upon by the lecturers, lamented how the action is hindering their career.
The fresh medical graduates were preparing for their induction into the medical profession in July when the strike started leading to the cancellation of the induction at the height of preparation for it.
Following the strike, many of the students who would have been issued their license and be engaged to begin their one year housemanship in various hospitals across the country have been denied by the hospitals due to their inability to obtain their license and do their induction.
According to the students, the need for ASUU to allow them to be inducted and licensed became imperative as this will enable them to contribute their “own quota to augmenting the health of the nation which is an utmost desire rather than sitting at home and losing some of our clinical knowledge and skills.”
Some of the students who spoke under anonymity, appealed to the national body of ASUU to consider the medical students’ predicament.
Still lamenting the effect of the strike, the students declared: “The dream of every university student is to one day finish and finish well. For an OAU student, there is more: to finish not too later than the normal appointed time for the course being studied. For a medical student in OAU, there’s even more: to finish in a not-too-late time and in addition get a housemanship placement and begin a life which is believed to be a much better one than that lived as a medical student.
“Beyond the wasted bags of rice and kilogrammes of meat and dated souvenirs made in anticipation of the induction, there lies an important document the fresh medical graduates must possess that only an induction, which was cancelled as fallout of the ASUU strike, could provide.
