The President of the Students Union Government at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Miss Helene Ocheme, has said that the strike by university lecturers can worsen the country’s security situation.
Speaking with newsmen in Makurdi on Friday, Ocheme appealed to the federal government to resolve the issues leading to the strike with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
According to her, some students had taken to armed robbery and other vices inimical to the peace and security of the country in the course of the strike.
Ocheme said the crisis had been politicised and urged the parties not to deviate from the contending issues.
The union leader appealed to those fanning the embers of discord to desist and allow amicable resolution of the strike.
She also advised the government not to employ undemocratic methods to break the strike but engage the union in discussion.
The lecturers in public universities had on July 1 downed tools to press for the implementation of the 2009 agreement the union reached with the government.
