NUT urges FG to resolve lingering ASUU strike

The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT), Michael Olukoya, on Saturday 4th October 2013 appealed to the Federal Government to make pragmatic efforts to resolve the prolonged ASUU strike.
He made the appeal in Sokoto during the celebration of this year’s World Teachers’ Day.
Mr. Olukoya, who was represented by the National Representative of NUT in Kebbi, Sanusi Umar, urged the Federal Government to do everything within its powers to address the prolonged industrial crisis.
“We are confident that our university lecturers are very sensitive to the constraints and efforts of the government. We will respond duly to positive and pragmatic actions of the federal government in this regard,’’ he said.
In his address, Chika Maidamma, the Chairman of NUT in Sokoto State, commended the state government for its commitment and efforts to improve the education sector.
Mr. Maidamma, however, appealed to the state government to include the union members in its housing and car loans programme for civil servants, while effecting outstanding teachers’ promotions.
The Guest Speaker, Dangana Yahayya of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, said that constitutional amendment should be made to protect the teachers’ welfare so as to promote improved service delivery.
“However, there is urgent need for collaboration among major stakeholders in basic education, particularly in the area of funding and provision of infrastructure,” he said.
